Candelaria is especially famous for its main attraction, the Basilica of Our Lady of Candelaria. This makes Candelaria the most important pilgrimage site for Catholic Christians in the Canary Islands. The patron saint, the Virgin of Candelaria, is venerated in the Basilica. It is said that the statue of the patron saint was found by two Guanches on Candelaria Beach about 100 years before the arrival of the Spanish in the Canary Islands. Unfortunately, the original was lost in a catastrophic flood in 1826 and was replaced a few years later by the current statue.
This historic site, which still features many historic buildings, is also marked by nine large statues of the former Guanche kings, the menceyes, located on the seaward side of the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias, where the sanctuary is also situated.
The plaza is connected by a busy pedestrian zone—Calle Obispo Pérez Cáceres, lined with shops, bars, and restaurants—to a marina, which highlights the importance of Candelaria’s maritime tradition for visitors and tourists alike. Opposite the pedestrian zone lies a long beach of black lava sand, and other beaches stretch out around it. A seawater pool is also available for cooler days.
Candelaria, with its seaside location, rich cultural life, and beautiful mountainous interior, is a pleasant place for all interests and preferences. Furthermore, the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, as well as Reina Sofía Airport and the tourist centers in the south—such as Golf del Sur, El Médano, Los Cristianos, and Playa de las Américas—are not far away.
